RecentlyaquarterofacenturyhaspassedsincethepublicationofProfessorJerzyKolendo’sarticleinwhich,
basingonthearchivalmaterialsoftheWarsawSocietyofFriendsofScience(hereinafter:WSFS),hedetermined
thelocationofanecropolisoftheWielbarkculturefromOpinogóra(present-dayOpinogóraGórna)innorth
Mazoviaandcriticallydiscussedthebasisforitsdating.Letusrecallthatin1818GeneralWincentyKrasiński,
theownerofOpinogóra,donatedtothecollectionoftheWSFSaclayurn,whichhadsupposedlybeenfoundin
Opinogóra,andin1822someobjectsfromtheequipmentofaninhumationgrave,discoveredinthegeneral’s
presenceinthevicinityofthelocalchurch;healsomentionedanotherurnwhichhadbeendestroyedatthetime.
In1832,afterthefalloftheNovemberUprising,thecollectionoftheWSFSwereconsideredbytheRussian
authoritiestobewartrophiesandweretransportedtoStPetersburgwheretheyweredivided-inaccordance
withthetsar’sinstructions-betweenvariouspersonsandinstitutions,whileapartofthecollectionwassimply
destroyed.Thosespecimens,however,arenottheonly“antiquities”whichcanbeassociatedwiththeOpinogóra
cemeteryoftheWielbarkculture.
AttheInstituteofArchaeologyoftheJagiellonianUniversity,inthecollectionoftheformerArchaeological
Cabinet,aclayvesseliskeptwhichfounditswaytheretogetherwiththecollectionofCountAleksander
Przezdziecki,whichwerewilledbyhimtotheCabinetuponhisdeathin1871.Thevesselisadeepbowlwith
anunevensurface,itscolourrangingfrombrownishgreytobrown,coveredbyirregulartracesofhorizontal,
unevensmoothing.Theheightofthevesselisapproximately17-18cm,thediameteroftherimis25-25.5cm,of
thebelly27.5-28cm,andofthebase11.5-12cm(Fig.1).
ThedescriptionofthevesselcorrespondstotypeVIAintheSchindler/Wołągiewiczclassicationofthepot-
teryoftheWielbarkculture.Thesevesselshaveaquitebroad-rangingchronology:fromphaseB

AleksanderPrzezdzieckidisplayedthevesselfromOpinogóraatanexhibitionofantiquitiesinWarsawin
1856.Atthetimetheurnstillcontained“burntbones,partofanotherurnburntwithbonesandashes,aswell
asre
mainsofredclaybeads”andinthisstateitwaspreserveduntilthe1920s/1930s.Later,thecontentswere

emoved,probablyduringasecondaryconservation,andweremostlikelylost.
