Mostaccidentsthatoccurinthechemistrylaboratoryarearesultofcarelessness,im-
patience,improperorunauthorizedexperimentation,anddisregardforsafetyrulesorproper
operatingprocedures.Inordertominimizethechancesofanaccidentinthelaboratorycer-
tainrulesandregulationsmustbeobeyedatalltimeswhenoneisworkingorobservingin
achemicallaboratory.Therefore,itisnotadvisableforanyonetoworkinalaboratorywithout
properknowledgeofthedangersinvolved.Duetotheinherentdangerspresentinachemi-
callaboratoryexercise,itshouldbeunderstoodthatthefollowingrulesmustbeobeyedto
minimizethechanceofanaccident.Thestudentisexpectedtoexerciseproperjudgement
andextremecautionatalltimeswhenworkinginthelaboratory.
1.Beforecomingtothelaboratory,studyinstructionofexperimenttounderstandthepro-
cedurethatyouwillbeperforming.Youneedtoprepareforeachexperimenttobeable
toworkefcientlyinthelaboratoryandtobereadyforshorttestbeforetheexperiment.
2.Allpersonalbelongingsshouldbeplacedinthebookcasesasyouenterthelaboratory.
3.Donotperformunauthorizedexperimentsorworkinalaboratoryalone.
4.Approvedeyeprotectionmustbewornatalltimesinthelaboratory.Eyeprotectionmust
besplashproofchemicalgoggles.
5.Appropriatelabcoatisrequiredtowearatalltimeswhileinthelaboratory.
6.Longhairandlooseclothingmustbeconfinedwhileinalaboratory.
7.Neverwearsandalsoropen-toedshoesinthelaboratory.
8.Appropriateglovesshouldbewornasneeded:
-PVCprotectsagainstmildcorrosivesandirritants,
-Naturalrubberprotectsagainstmildcorrosivematerialandelectricshock,
-Thermalglovesshouldbeusedwhenhandlingsmallhotobjects.
9.Eating,smoking,anddrinkingarenotallowedinachemistrylaboratory.
10.Usethefumehoodswhentoxicorirritatingvapoursareinvolved.
11.Alwaysuseapipettepumptofillapipette,neverusemouthsuction.Keeppipettein
verticalpositionwhenusingtopreventfluidfromrollingbackintopipettepumpand
contaminatingnextmaterialused.
12.Neverpourwaterintoconcentratedacid.
13.Neverplacechemicalsdirectlyonthebalancepan.Alwaysuseaproperweighingcontainer
whenusingabalancetoweighachemical.Neverpourchemicalsdirectlyoverthebalance.
14.Neverreturnunusedchemicalstotheiroriginalcontainer(unlessdirectedtodosoby
theinstructor).
