Spaceisnottheonlyobjecttowhichweascribecontinuousstructure.The

intensityofstream,orofcolor,seemtohavethisquality.But,aboveall,itis

theflowoftimethatiscontinuous.

Alooseandfreestructure,composedofisolatedelements,istheopposite

ofacontinuousstructure.Suchastructureissaidtobediscrete.Theword

“discrete”isderivedfromtheLatindiscretus,separate,detachedfromother

things.“Discrete”thusmeans“consistingof,orpertainingto,distinctand

individualparts.”

andthethoughtthattheycouldbetherawmaterialofspacedoesnotalways

strikeusasalien.Thisdilemmaisoneofthedifficultiesweencounterwhen

wethinkofthenotionofacontinuum.

Anotherdifficultyistheinfinitudeofspace,anotionwhichsuggestitself

irresistiblywhenwethinkofstraightlines,yetanotherelementofspace.

Afterafewattemptswegiveuptheideaofdefiningastraightline.Itseems

tobeasprimitiveastheconceptofspace.Onecanalsoadoptthereverseview
