Multiphaseflowsandtheirphenomenahaveincreasinglybecomethesubjectof
investigationinawidevarietyofengineeringsystems,similarlytothedevelopment
offlowquantities,whichareessentialintheunderstandingofmanytechnicalpro-
cesses.Multiphaseflowmeteringandcharacterisationareabigchallengeinmany
industrialsystemsfortheiroptimumdesignandsafeoperation.Itis,however,byno
meanssufficientforthecontroloftoday’smodernindustrialtechnology,wherethe
transportofmaterialsisacrucialelementintheproductionprocess.Inallareasof
theindustrialenvironment,fromthefoodtothepetrochemicalindustry,control
offlowisthemainproblemfrombothaneconomicandproductqualitypointofview,
wherehighprecisionofflowmeteringisunrelentinglyrequiredinordertoprecisely
controltheprocess.
Thekeyparameterofflowmeasurementsisvelocity.Therefore,themotivation
forwritingthismonographhasbeentheneedforaworkcoveringthefullrangeof
algorithmsfordeterminingthevelocitycomponentsinmultiphaseflows.Inthecase
ofadynamicmultiphaseflow,especiallysuchasaswirlflow,velocityvariations
inmagnitudeanddirectionareoneofthemostimportantissuesgeneratingerrors
duringflowmeasurement.Inthiscase,determiningthevelocityrequiresadditional
analysisofallthreevelocitycomponents:axial,radialandangular.
Themonographpresentsareviewofalgorithmsusingnon-invasivemethods
thatenableamoreaccuratedeterminationofthekeyflowparameters,especially
formultiphaseflows.Inordertomeettherequirement,methodsofflowparameter
measurementhavebeenconsideredbasedonstatisticalanalysisofdatagathered
frome.g.ElectricalTomographysystemsorRadioactiveParticleTrackingtechnique
systems.Allthepresentedmethodshavebeendevelopedwiththedirectparticipation
oftheauthorandexpresshismanyyearsofexperienceinthisscientificfield.
Theauthorhopesthatthemonographwillbeusefulforawiderangeofreaders
dealingwiththedevelopmentofalgorithmsforflowmeasurements.
