Abstract
Rodents(Rodentia)aremammalsthathavebeencloselyassociatedwithhumans
forcenturies.Themutualinfluenceofthesespeciesoneachotherismultidi-
mensional-rodentsaccompanyusdiscordantly-frompeststhroughlaboratory
animalstocompanionanimalskeptathome.Thismonographdescribestheresults
ofamorphologicalandcomparativeanalysisofthedigestivesystemstructures
oftheguineapig(Caviaporcellus),thehousemouse(Musmusculus),thebrownrat
(Rattusnorvegicus),andtheDjungarianhamster(Phodopussungorus).Morphological
elementsoftheoralcavity,salivaryglands,stomachs,intestines,livers,andpan-
creasesof40rodentswereexamined.Severalanatomicaltechniqueswereused,
whichenabledthedevelopmentofadetailedandcomprehensivedescriptionofthe
examinedorgans.Thedetailedanatomyofmanyrodentspeciesisstillunknown.
Withthegrowingpopularityofthedescribedspecieskeptaspetsinhomes,
thereisaneedfordetaileddescriptionsoftheiranatomy.Suchdescriptionsare
anexcellentbasisfordevelopingthepathophysiologyofdiseasesinthisgroupof
animalsand,thus,themedicalandveterinaryprotocolsusedintheirtreatment
byveterinaryclinicians.
