Abstract
(ł)Wearelivingintimesofthecollapseofauthorityandofrespectforscholars.Thisis
illustratedbythegrowingpopularityofsuperstitions,stereotypes,andprejudices.Things
havereachedapointwheresomeexhibitprideoftheirracist,sexist,andhomophobic
views.Theseworryingtrendsshouldbecounteredwitheducationandanabsolutesolidarity
withpersecutedminorities.(…).
Thepresentpublicationcontainstheresultsofresearchconductedinthefield
ofsocialattitudesandopinionstowardshomelessnessandthehomeless.Aside
fromawidespectrumofstatisticalanalyses,thebookproposesatheoreticalcon-
tributiontomethodology,concerningthemouldingofsocialattitudeswiththe
helpofthemediaandtheinformationthattheycanprovide.
AsProfessorJoannaMizielińskastressesintheabovequotation,aworld-view
basedonlabels,stereotypes,andprejudicesleadsdirectlytoindifference,which,
inturn,mayleadtohostilebehaviour–notonlytowardsthepeoplewhoare
thesubjectofthisstudy,buttowardseveryone.Lookingattoday)smediames-
sages,onefindsthatattitudestheybuildarebasedonantagonism,insinuations,
andhalf-truths.
Thefirst,theoreticalpartofthestudyissupplementedbyabroaddescription
oftheresultsofstatisticalanalyses,precededbyanoverviewofthemethodol-
ogyusedinthebook,whichprimarilyinvolvesanextensivesurvey,butforobvi-
ousreasonsalsoadoptsatriangulationofobservationalmethodsanddocument
analysis.Fortheanalysisofthedataobtained,eachofthequestionsusedinthe
surveyispresentedintheformofatableofcountsforabroadaccountofboththe
studygroupandtheresultsthemselves.Correlationsofselectedvariablesarealso
