restoredafterWorldWarII.Hewasoneofahandfulofpeoplegoingthroughthehabili-
tationprocessdespitealreadybeingaprofessor.
UsingunpaidleavesofabsenceandNationalCulturegrants,heenjoyedeconomic
andagriculturalstudiesabroad,inagreementwithProf.StefanMoszczeński.In1935,
heattendedsix-monthstudiesinGermanyandAustria,whilein1936hevisitedSwit-
zerland,FranceandGreatBritain.Therefore,hehadtheopportunitytodirectlylearn
aboutagriculturaleconomicsandtheresearchmethodsusedinWesternEuropeatthe
time.HerenewedhiscontactswithforeignacademiccentersafterWorldWarII,fol-
lowinghisreturntoworkattheSGGW
.Hisparticipationinglobalcongressesofsci-
entificassociationsbecamethefoundationforthesecontacts.HespokefluentFrench,
English,GermanandRussianandreadinseveralotherlanguages.Hetookpartinthree
congressesheldbytheInternationalAssociationforAppliedEconometrics(IAAE)in
Mexico,FranceandBelarus.Ontheirinitiativeandwiththeirsupport,in1926here-
ceivedaninvitationfromtheFordFoundationtostayintheUnitedStatesofAmerica
forseveralmonths.There,hevisitedmanyacademiccentersandbefriendedmany
agriculturaleconomistswithwhomhemaintainedintouchthroughouttherestofhis
life.Inthe1960–1976periodheattended8congressesheldbyCIOSTA.Heorgan-
izedtheRegionalEuropeanSeminaroftheInternationalAssociationofAgricultural
Economistsin1968andthe1970CIOSTACongress.Hecloselybefriendedmanymem-
bersoftheseassociations,suchasNilsWestermarck(Finland),GaryJohnsonandEarl
Heady(USA),DenisBritton(GreatBritain),ErwinReischandGunterSteffen(Federal
RepublicofGermany),andPielDescrouisseaux(France).Thankstothesecontacts,
Prof.RyszardManteuffelcouldgivehiscoworkersattheSGGWandotheruniversities
manyopportunities,suchasstudiesandscientificinternshipsabroad.
InSeptember1948,hestartedworkingattheSGGWasaseniorassistantatthe
DepartmentofAgriculturalEconomics.In1950,hewasnominatedanassistantpro-
fessor.Inthisveryyear,thedepartmentwasrenamedtheDepartmentofAgricultural
ManagementandOrganization.InJuly1954,hebecameanassociateprofessorand
in1965afullprofessor.
In1965,hewaschosentobeacorrespondencememberandin1971afullmem-
berofthePolishAcademyofSciences(PAN).HewasamemberofthePANPresidium
forthreeterms.Intheyears1957–1974hewasthechairmanofthePANAgricultur-
alEconomicsCommittee.Underhisleadership,thecommitteewasamongthemost
activeofallcommitteeswithinthePanDepartmentofAgriculturalandForestry
Sciences.Itsscopeencompassedtheentiretyofeconomicandagriculturalsciencesand,
partially,relatedsciences.ThroughthescientificsessionsheldintheCenteraswell
asvariousprovinces,andperiodicassessmentsofthestateofPoland’sagriculturaleco-
nomics,theCommitteefulfilledaninspirationalandcoordinatingroleindeveloping
thesesciences.ItadvisedthePANandstateauthoritiesoneconomicissues,primarilyre-
latedtoagricultureandruralmatters.TheCommitteeintegratedthescientificcommu-
nityofPolishagriculturaleconomistsandrepresenteditininternationalorganizations.
