Thesixthchapterdealswiththeproblemoftherelationshipbetween

thecontemporaryusageoftechnologyinqualitativeresearchand

analysisofdatainsociology(usingtechnicaldevicessuchascomputers

andsoftware)andthesociologicalmind.Theresearchandanalysisof

socialrelationsandsocialworldsareveryoftenconductedusingthe

technologythatwedefinehere,inaverybroadsense,asmethodical

andtechnicalprocedures,software,calculatingdevicesandtechnical

devicesfortheobservationoftheWorldandrecordingdata,anddevices

fortheanalysisofquantitativeandqualitativedata.Technologycould

beusedasinstrumentforanalysingtheHexternalworld”(through

aninstrumentaluseoftechnology)bytheHindependent”sociological

mind.Thisisanattitudethatisapartofthemodernisticapproachto

Hsociety”.

Herewealsoanalysetheroleoftechnologyinproducingsociological

knowledge,whiletakingintoconsiderationthehistorical,political,and

ideologicaldimensionsofthephenomenon.Theproductionofknowledge

isdonebyindividualsociologists,whoareimmersedinthesocialworld

ofsociology,andtheprocessisperformedinthehereandnowby

particularsociologistsusingthetechnologyofproceduresandmaterial

devices.Wealsoanalysethetechnologyinuseandtheexperiencesof

technologythatproducetheknowledge.

Thequestionsaddressedinthischapterareasfollows:

1.Dosociologists,intheirthinking,dependonthetechnologythey

useinresearchingsociety,oristhetechnologyonlyinstrumentalto

theirHindependentsociologicalmind”?

2.Isobserving/beingawareoftheuseoftechnologyinevery

momentaliberatingstrategyforasociologist?

Theseproblemsareanalysedviathephenomenologicalexplication

ofexperiencesofusingtheCAQDAStechnology(ComputerAssisted

QualitativeDataAnalysis).ItwasusedtheconceptofRichardHycner

forouranalysisofqualitativedata,inourcasetheauto-reportsfrom

thesessionsofuseoftechnologytoanalysequalitativedata.Theauto-

reportsideacomesfromtheinspirationofthecontemplativeinquiry

modelofsocialscience.

Theseventhchapterexaminestheissueofhowtheorganizational

cultureofacertaininstitutionisbeingexperienced,byreconstructing

theleadingthemescomingfromauto-observationanddescriptionsof

it.Insteadofinvestigatinghowitisperceivedorhowitsvaluesare

verbalized,thestudyundertakestoanalysetheactualexperiencing

ofcertainspacesandsocialrelations,aswellashowtheseare
